Limited Ingredient Diets: A Solution for Pets with Allergies

If your pet has chronic itching, ear infections, or digestive issues, a limited ingredient diet (LID) might be the answer.

What Is a Limited Ingredient Diet?

An LID contains a single animal protein source and a single carbohydrate source — typically a novel protein your pet hasn't eaten before, like venison, duck, or rabbit. The fewer ingredients, the easier it is to identify what's causing an allergic reaction.

Novel Proteins

Most food allergies in pets are to common proteins like chicken or beef. Switching to a novel protein — one your pet has never been exposed to — eliminates the allergen. Venison and duck are popular choices because they're rarely used in standard commercial foods.

The Elimination Process

Feed only the LID for 8-12 weeks — no treats, table scraps, or flavored medications. If symptoms improve, you've identified a food allergy. You can then gradually reintroduce other ingredients to pinpoint the specific allergen.

Signs of Food Allergies

Work with your veterinarian throughout this process. They can rule out environmental allergies and help you design an appropriate elimination diet for your pet.
